Course Reserves

Placing print resources on reserve

Faculty may place print materials on Library Reserve by completing an online Reserve Request form. Materials may belong either to faculty requestors or to the Library. You can search course reserves by instructor name or course code.

Photocopies must comply with the terms of the Access Copyright Interim Post-Secondary Educational Institutions Tariff and VIU's fair dealing guidelines for copying and library reserves.

  • Copies must not exceed 10% of a published work, or the following, whichever is greater:
    • an entire chapter from a book provided that it does not exceed 20 per cent of the book;
    • an entire article from a periodical publication;
    • an entire short story, play, poem or essay from a book or periodical publication;
    • an entire entry from an encyclopedia, dictionary, annotated bibliography or similar reference book;
    • an entire reproduction of an artistic work from a book or periodical publication; and
    • a single musical score from a book or periodical publication.
  • Copies must not exceed 5% of a textbook produced primarily for the post secondary education market, or the following, whichever is greater:
    • an entire chapter from a textbook provided that it does not exceed 10 per cent of the textbook;
    • an entire short story, play, poem or essay from the textbook provided that it does not exceed 10 per cent of the textbook; and
    • an entire reproduction of an artistic work or a single musical score from the textbook provided that it does not exceed 10 per cent of the textbook.
  • One copy may be made for each 30 students in a course of instruction up to a maximum of 3.
  • Copies are made as an optional and supplementary source of information for students and must be a small proportion (no more than 25 per cent) of the required reading for a particular course.

Online resources

Faculty can provide online access to required or recommended course readings from websites and moodle courses by creating stable links to online articles and other licensed Library resources.
