KAREN ALDEN
Position: Fitness & Lifestyle Technician, since 2008
Education: Recreation & Health Education Degree (UVic),
Recreation Leadership and Personal Training Diploma (Camosun), and other fitness
certifications. Karen is also contemplating a Master degree now that she has
arrived at VIU.
Karen is the newest member to the Campus Rec crew. One thing that immediately
impressed her was the staff’s connection and dedication to the students
and each other. “Campus Rec staff is extremely friendly, welcoming and
helpful. It’s easy to see why the students want to hang around the gym.
”
Karen’s focus is to expand the Lifestyle component of her part time position by enhancing and integrating Health & Wellness services and programs here on campus as well as in the community. “My goal is to encourage students and staff to develop a personal responsibility for taking complete control of their health. It’s up to each person how that will happen; I’m here to help pave the way.” She has worked in the recreation field for over 8 years and has no plans to change. Promoting healthy lifestyles is her driving force.
Karen’s door is always open (when she is here that is...) and she welcomes all students and staff to drop in at any time.

MIKE JAMES
Position: Gym Attendant, since 2000
Education: History Degree, Minor PE (VIU)
Mike graduated from Nanaimo District Secondary and came straight to Malaspina (now VIU) and began his athletic career with both the soccer and basketball teams. Since then he moved on to UVic to continue his education.
Mike thinks of himself as a facilitator to the students that work here to make their experiences a positive one. He wants them to build relationships and skills while they are here at VIU!
Mike’s true passion is endurance training and this can be seen in his commitment to training and participation in Iron Man Canada. Mike is also a fitness instructor and leads the “Learn to Run” class as well. Mike has made numerous attempts to get a running club going here on campus and will continue to do so, so if you are interested you know who to talk to. Mike has also organized a few races here on campus with some success. Any question on training Mike is your man!
Mike’s second passion is basketball, as he is an active basketball referee at the University, College and High school level. He is also involved with coaching and is committed to organizing the Steve Nash Basketball League in Nanaimo which is a great experience to help build our young future Mariners.
Mike’s spare time is spent playing with his two boys, Jackson and Carter, spending some time with my wife or laying on the couch recovering from all the hard training. Mike has found there is not much spare time in his life but is sure to enjoy whatever he is doing and still likes to get a little goofy when he does have that spare time!
